The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
