An defence official has revealed that the MoD is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been told to avoid talking about classified matters in all vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Context

The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
